BASIC ITEMS OR STATEMENT PIECES?

No doubts—both, end of discussion.

Now, not joking. A fashionable wardrobe is built on a foundation of basic and statement pieces that work coherently together to create something chic yet unique at the same time (in my humble opinion).

It’s not about minimalism or maximalism as I have written about before, where I discussed the differences between the two. This time, it’s about the balance—a cohesive mix of both concepts—and how to combine them in a way that makes sense in a wardrobe, an outfit, or whatever you’re styling.

The division will always come down to personal preferences. For me, it’s easier to start with a more basic construction—well-fitted jeans, a great white shirt—and then add a statement piece, like a colorful, bold, or unique bag, sunglasses, or accessories.

However, this theory also works in reverse: an incredible statement shirt or dress can be perfectly grounded with subtle, minimal accessories—basic shoes or a simple bag—that tie everything together.

But what about chicness and true fashion essence? Do either of these approaches define it? Well, fashion, as predictable as it can be, is ultimately shaped by the moment—by how well you understand it, and how your outfit resonates with what’s happening in the consumer’s mind, surrounded by trends, moods, and cultural shifts.

In the end, it’s not just about choosing what makes it the most appealing, but playing fully enough to understand what makes you feel the most secure and stylish — it’s about making it make sense to you. That’s where true style is built and then evolves.
