SPONTANEOUS LOOKBOOK
I didn’t have this post planned. Didn’t even think about developing it, but something I’ve learned from the construction of this project is that sometimes, free styling has much more meaning than planning it out.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m a freak for prepping and planning, and I’m a firm believer that in order to get things done, you must be consistent in your ideas and plan ahead of time to get the best results possible. However, that doesn’t mean that when it comes to spontaneous ideas, I feel like I’m representing myself the most. Yesterday, I spent my whole day at home and, with that, a spark of creativity came to mind. I started trying on some looks, playing and planning what are some things I’d like to wear.
I’ve been noticing the repetition in my looks—sometimes for the comfort in it, sometimes for the lack of creativity. So when I get a chance to actually express myself through fashion and project the way I’m looking forward to looking, it’s really nice because I almost don’t have to battle at all to get great results, or at least the results that make sense to me.
So that actually happened yesterday. All of a sudden, I’ve got a small lookbook of what I’d be wearing this fall until the temperatures start dropping and it becomes impossible not to grab a jacket.
Without thinking too much about it, I noticed that the composition in them is actually quite similar. I’ll take that as a small signature of mine and just pretend it was intentional, when in reality, I think it’s just the way I’d like to look.
The construction has a lot of skirts, long midi and mini. Petite heels, high-knee boots, never matching bags and shoes (please), and of course, bodysuits and snatched tops to give some kind of structure and balance to the bottom silhouettes.
Even though I do have a ‘capsule wardrobe’, I’m not the biggest fan of that principle. I’d rather experiment outside of what might be considered the essentials and play around with the dynamic of having special garments. However, there are some pieces in my wardrobe that definitely resonate with who I am and the way I like to project myself.
The perfect moment to identify those pieces, at least for me, is when the season changes and I take out the pieces I’ve had in storage for a while. I know it’s an essential to me when I look forward to wearing it again after it’s been out of sight for a season.
But the OG and favorites are the pieces that stay around my wardrobe all year round, either for their versatility throughout the seasons or for the special place they hold.
Clothes might be just clothes, and they’re certainly not a necessity. But for some, what sports, painting, or other hobbies are to others, fashion is to them — a way of playing, expressing, and finding meaning. In the end, it's all about the meaning you choose to give things. Just like everything else in life.
