BEFORE DRESSING FOR FALL

Inevitably, summer has to come to an end, and with that, I immediately start thinking about how the days will start getting shorter, going to the beach will no longer be a plan, and outfits will start covering most of our skin.

Summer is my favorite season. Even when, in terms of getting dressed, it is a period of the year when you have to prioritize wearing the lightest and shortest pieces, I find that the rest of the aspects of summer make it more fun and happy. However, September always feels like a new start, an opportunity to reinvent yourself—if you are like me and can’t stay still for longer than a few months—and, with that, get to wear pieces that you haven’t worn in a long time, that you might have forgotten about, and restart the way you were used to choosing your outfits for the last few months to start a new process.

That’s why today’s article has to exist. I’m getting dressed for before that happens, for before we all start wearing black, grey, navy, and brown on a daily basis, stop wearing skirts and flip-flops, and start wearing boots and loafers.

The transition has to start by combining pieces from both seasons, and pieces that you can wear in either of them individually. For me, a long white dress—if it is sleeveless, it would be trickier; if it has some sort of sleeves, like this one, it will get easier. Versatile to wear with sandals, but layers and boots will still give you the look.

In a less romantic tone of looks, biker shorts leave behind the mini shorts and showing all your leg, but three-quarter sleeves and boots will make it the perfect interesting fit for fall, whereas a tank top and ballerinas will prolong the summer look.

Long skirts too. They are my favorites, as you already know, not only because of their versatility but because they are much more comfortable than a mini skirt.

A good black leather bag is a staple for any season. Undeniably, a big one will make everyday choices easier and will work for almost any occasion.

Long-sleeve transparency is key. You are covered but still see-through, which is perfect for the in-between seasons. Some color is completely acceptable and nice to spice things up a bit, and checked shirts will be your best friend. Buttoned up, layered, tucked inside your pants, or with a white skirt—which you know can never not be found in my posts—and that is easily the best option.

Repeat that pattern, mix and match basic pieces and statement ones, and you will have a wardrobe versatile enough for any season, special enough for any occasion, and, step by step, clearer for your own true lifestyle.

And that’s really what transitional dressing is about: making what you already have work a little longer, while slowly introducing what comes next. No need to rush into fall just yet.

I’m leaving below a few pieces I would buy right now to make that transition a little easier—and, hopefully, wear well beyond just one season.
